The Pope

Pope Francis I, the latest head of the Roman Catholic Church, went on record recently saying that the Big Bang theory is correct. He is also accommodating on homosexuality. How are we to react to this man and his claims? Should we have respect for him and call him “His Holiness” as many people do? Should we rely on his interpretation of the Bible as being authentic? No. This man is a false teacher who has nothing but contempt for the Bible as God has revealed it to us. Although we are made holy by the grace and Holy Spirit of God and are called to be such, the Pope is not holy but is a sinful man like us.  This being the case, how did such a man become head of the largest church in the world? The Roman Catholic Church believes that the Pope’s office originated with Peter who was the first pontiff. They base this on Jesus’ words ”  And I say also unto thee that thou art Peter and upon this rock I will build my church and the gates of Hell shall not prevail against it”(Matthew 16:18). This text, though, refers not to Peter himself, but to his confession “thou art the Christ, the son of the living God”(Matthew 16:16). The church stands or falls on this confession that not only Peter, but all of us as God’s children make. We are living in the end times and of the signs that the world is ending is given in Matthew 24: 11: “And many false prophets shall rise and deceive many”. While this pope is not the Antichrist, he is a type of him. “Little children, it is the last time: and as ye have heard that antichrist shall come, even now are there many antichrists, whereby we know that it is the last time”(I John 2:18). The Pope’s interpretation of the Bible cannot be trusted because he brings his own word, not God’s. “As we said before, so say I now again, if any man preach any other gospel unto you than that ye have received, let him be accursed”(Galatians 1:9). When we know how to evaluate what the Roman Catholic and other churches teach, we will know how to apply the word of God to their doctrines. This will enable us to steer clear of teachings that are contrary to the Bible. May God give us the grace to do this!

Theistic Evolution

As young people and young adults we often go to college in order to learn about the world around us and obtain a degree in a particular field that interests us. Even if we don’t major in science, we often are required to take science courses for our general education credits. In these classes we are exposed to evolution. We are told that a given fossil is 65 million years old, for example. If this is at a secular college such as Grand Valley State University or the University of Michigan, we can easily debunk such a theory as being a lie. It becomes much more difficult, however, when Christian colleges such as Calvin College are teaching this theory. This is because they try to use Scripture to their advantage. In Genesis 1 we read “and the evening and the morning were the first day.” This continues through the other five days of creation. The theistic evolutionist says that these evenings and mornings weren’t what we know them as today, but are rather millions of years of geological time. Thus the evening and the morning are the first million years, second million years etc. In other words they believe that God used evolution to create the world. This, however, runs contrary to what is taught in the Bible: “In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth. And the earth was without form, and void; and darkness was upon the face of the deep. And spirit of God moved upon the face of the waters” (Genesis 1:1,2). “By the word of the Lord were the heavens made; and all the hosts of them by the breath of His mouth…For he spake, and it was done; he commanded, and it stood fast” (Psalm 33:6,9). These passages show that God created the world we live in from absolutely nothing. Our concern here is not with evolutionists in the main colleges and universities of our land. Our concern is people who call themselves Christians who try to blend creationism and evolutionism into one fluid piece. Christian colleges are beneficial institutions where we may take classes and major in subjects that have something of a biblical perspective to them. However, we must not get caught up in theistic evolution as it is taught in these schools. Why are we to cling to young-earth creationism as taught in the Bible? We are to hold this view because of the faith God has wrought in our hearts “Through faith we understand that the worlds were framed by the word of God, so that the things which are seen were not made of things which do appear” (Hebrews 11:3). When we by God’s grace and Holy Spirit have this assurance confirmed in our hearts. “But without faith it is impossible to please him: for he that cometh to God must believe that he is, and that he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him” (Hebrews 11:6). Let us have a spirit of discernment so that we know what is true and what is false in our education (1 John 4:1). In doing this God will use our education to benefit us not only academically, but spiritually as well.

The Darwin Myth: The Life and Lies of Charles Darwin

The Darwin Myth: The Life and Lies of Charles Darwin, By Benjamin Wiker. Regnery Publishing Inc. (2009), 171 pages, $12.00.

Written on the occasion of the 200th anniversary of Darwin’s birth and 150th anniversary of the publication of his Origin of Species, The Darwin Myth attempts to provide a balanced, fair, and also critical examination of Darwin’s life and work that avoids the current tendency either to demonize or deify Darwin. The structure of the book is that of a biography. As the title indicates, Benjamin Wiker’s primary purpose in this biography is to engage and debunk the secular mythology which has been constructed around the world’s most well-known naturalist. Specifically, Wiker sets out to refute the pervasive myth that Darwin simply burst onto the scene with an entirely novel theory of evolution, and that this theory was universally accepted by the scientific community of the time. On the contrary, Wiker argues that idea of evolution has a long history among European enlightenment skeptics and ultimately has its roots in the thought of the Greek philosopher Epicurus. When Darwin pioneered his theory of evolution, he drew upon this intellectual tradition. Evolution, Wiker argues, is not simply pure untainted science. And in my opinion, he succeeds admirably.

The first three chapters of the book consist of an examination of Darwin’s life. Wiker considers Darwin’s family history, his upbringing, his early education in theology school, and his journeys abroad on the Beagle, during which he collected much of the empirical data for the Origin of Species. The next three chapters consider the years during which Darwin published and publicized his version of the evolutionary theory. Here Wiker elucidates the significant controversy which Darwin’s work stirred up within the scientific community. Far from receiving universal acclamation, Darwin’s theory was stridently criticized by many of the foremost scientists of his day. Even many of his closest friends rejected his version of evolution. Wiker’s presentation of this history is quite revealing. The final chapters of the book are dedicated to the intellectual implications of evolution. Wiker persuasively demonstrates how the destructive philosophy of Social Darwinism and the practice of Eugenics logically arise out of Darwin’s scientific theory. These are implications which today’s secular society has done its best to conceal. Overall this book is an excellent and informative read. The author’s style is erudite, yet also clear and witty. The chapters are well organized, and the arch of the book’s argument is easy to follow.

So, is this a fitting book for a Reformed young man or woman to read? If you are one who is interested in the history surrounding the publication of Darwin’s evolutionary writings, the intellectual milieu in which Darwin developed his theory, and the implications which the theory has for broader society, this is a great book for you. Above all the book is a work of intellectual history. Wiker does not engage Darwin or evolution from a theological perspective, nor does the book’s value lie in providing a Biblical response to evolutionism; such is not the author’s intent. What this book does provide is deep insight into the origins of the Origin of Species and roots of the theory of evolution. In so doing it offers insights which may deepen one’s understanding of Darwinism. This is important, since one must understand a theory in order to refute it.
