Who is God? Such a broad but loaded question. As someone who knows God, it’s not too hard to answer this, and I could probably go plenty of different directions in how I answer. But if the person asking me this question was someone who didn’t know about God, I would have to start simple. A good way to start is with creation.
God is the Creator of the creation. There is order about it, and beauty, and majesty. All the words we use to describe the creation, describe God. Even the things in creation we think are disgusting or troublesome point to the judgment of God for our sins. Romans 8:21-22 speaks of the creation in that light when it says, “Because the creature itself also shall be delivered from the bondage of corruption into the glorious liberty of the children of God. For we know the whole creation groaneth and travaileth in pain together until now.”
Although there are bad things in creation and God’s judgment is terrible, the beauty in the creation is almost unmatched. God said when He created the world that it was good! Mountains, sunsets, cliffs and rocks, are wonderful reflections of the beauty and utter majesty of God. There is nothing that compares to standing in the middle of a valley and being surrounded by the vast mountains all around you. It makes a man feel so small. The comfort we have in that shows us that God is much bigger than the mountains and the cliffs and rocks. He is more beautiful and majestic than the most colorful sunrise or sunset you’ve ever seen. The skies truly are a painting of God, and every single person is different in some way. His works are high above ours. God is a Rock to His people and the skies show forth His glory, as spoken of in Psalm 19:1. “The heavens declare the glory of God; and the firmament sheweth His handywork.”
The intricacy of the animals shows incredible design and pattern that proves the order of God. I could say the same about the human race. We were created with design and pattern as well, but God wanted man to carry His image, which included God’s perfect knowledge, righteousness, and holiness. None in creation, save man, was created with this. Man lost God’s image because he sinned, and because man sinned, strife appeared in the creation. There are biting insects, bitter cold, and blistering hot weather. But God does bring peace and grace. In the midst of winter He sends the sun. In times of drought and famine He blesses with rain and food. Creation and the Creator are so closely related that by knowing the order and beauty and majesty of the creation, you see a reflection of the order, beauty, and majesty of the Lord.
Again, who is God? God is so great that our earthly minds cannot comprehend all that God is. But I do know that you can see God reflected in His creation. You can see His attributes, whether it be His majesty, or His judgment. It’s only a glimpse, but it’s a great gift that God gave to us that we can learn more about Him.
