Lightning is one of the most amazing phenomena in God’s creation. As I write this, we are experiencing a major rainstorm that has had some very vivid lightning strokes. This phenomena is caused by positive and negative charges in a cloud that collide with each other and produce a huge electrical flash. The sound that we hear as the lightning expands is thunder. Lightning existed in Biblical times. It was reported at Mount Sinai when God gave the 10 Commandments (Exodus 20:18). Some believe that the fire God sent from Heaven when two groups of fifty soldiers were consumed when trying to capture Elijah was lightning. I believe that it was fire that God miraculously sent from Heaven. In the New Testament Jesus mentions that just as vivid lightning is very obvious as blazes forth in the sky, so the coming of the Son of Man will be well known. Although lightning strikes can be deadly and dangerous, we have the assurance that they are under God’s control. We can have this comfort as we watch summer thunderstorms.
