Our world continues to grow more wicked every day. Many people think that they know better than God and can therefore determine for themselves what is right and wrong. The popular social networking site Facebook recently added 56 different gender options in addition to male and female. Among these options is “transgendered”. I don’t intend to list all of the options or the graphic ways in which people try to change their bodies to become something they are not meant to be. This development is the result of political correctness and has no basis in Scripture. God created DNA, a genetic code that determines all our physical traits, among which is gender. Genesis 1:27b says”male and female created he them”. Because of this one’s physical sex is unchangeable and shouldn’t be destroyed deliberately. Many today, however, believe that they are wiser than God and can make choices in this regard with no consequences whatsoever and find out otherwise. “There is a way that seemeth right unto man, but the ends thereof are the ways of death” (Proverbs 14:8). What are we to make of these events as Christians? When interacting online whether on e-mail, Facebook, Twitter or other means of communication, we are to use a spirit of discernment. “Beloved believe not every spirit, but try the spirits whether they be of God” (1 John 4:1). We certainly can make good use of Facebook as a means of edifying one another in our Christian walk, and a number of our own Protestant Reformed Churches have individual Facebook pages that they use as a means for evangelism. Nevertheless, we must be aware of what is of God and what is of Satan, and in doing so we can use our time online to the spiritual benefit of ourselves and others.
