How often we have storms. Whether it be floods, tornadoes, hailstorms, or earthquakes. The more common storms we face are of a different form. They are the whirlwind of life we face every week. The flood of sorrow into our lives with the loss of someone close to us, in the hailstorm of anxiety, or our whole world shaken by uncertainty. All of these things have two things in common. Number 1, God’s people were, are, and will be found in these situations, and Number 2, there always was, is, and will be a foundation for the church of Jesus Christ.
The people of God are built on the same foundation as the man in the Parable of Matthew 7. The storms of life came upon him, but he and his house were able to stand because the rock upheld them.
How important is the foundation of the house? It is the basis of the house, on which everything else is built. If you don’t have a foundation, your house will fall to pieces. So for the Christian, our whole life and worldview have to be built on a firm foundation. If our feet are not grounded and rooted in Jesus Christ, we will be swept away.
“Trust ye in the Lord for ever: for in the Lord Jehovah is everlasting strength.” In my Bible’s footnotes, “everlasting strength” can also be seen as the Rock of Ages. A rock is solid. It takes a lot to break a rock. Thankfully for us, our Rock cannot be eroded or washed away. It cannot be drilled through or blown up. It stands fast against all things that attack and hurl assaults at it again and again.
This Rock that we are kept safe in is the same Rock that provided water for Israel in the desert. He is also the same Rock that took out Goliath. And yet, this Rock is rejected (Matthew 21:42), but this same Rock becomes the cornerstone and the foundation of his chosen people.
This is also the same cleft in the rock that Moses hid in when he saw God’s glory. Moses was spared and kept safe because of the safety of this rock. This is the Rock that was pointed to by the Ebenezers or “stones of help” that Israel erected in the Old Testament.
Child of God, stay in the safety of the cleft of that Rock. Drink from the living water of this Rock. Build your life on this Rock. Most importantly, praise and exalt this Rock for all he has done for his church and for you!
“Rock of Ages, cleft for me, Let me hide myself in Thee; Let the water and the blood, From Thy riven side which flowed, Be of sin the double cure, Save me from its guilt and power.”
